The Old Gem (Elevator)
Once the hub every small farm town, the local elevator was a place to buy and sell grain and feed, as well as swap stories and local gossip. Many of them now sit desolate, with only their memories left.
While many of these elevators are no longer around, I can remember as a kid going to a few of them to pick up feed ingredients, or to sell corn or soybeans. They always had such a unique character to them, and there was usually some kind of "character" (other area farmer) with some local gossip, and gumball or lollipop treat involved for whatever kids tagged along for the trip. This is the old elevator in the tiny burg of Gem, Indiana. It is now privately owned and used for grain storage.
